Is India a safe place for Women?

Why are Women  continuously raped in India?

What is happening in India? India is no more a safe place for daughters, wives, mothers and women.

I am surprised when Parliamentarian speaks about no more skirts for girls as a remedy for gang rape. Why say no to girls or draw a dress code for girls alone, why not talk about attitude change and emphasis on “Women and girls to be treated with respect”. Rape in India is a common crime committed that goes unheard and unnoticed. The huge haul cry slowly wanes down with no justice made to the victim. The offenders freely move on. In most cases, the victim either commits suicide or dies due to serious injuries in an abdomen, intestines, and genitals due to the assault.

Is this something new in India? No, not at all….. Similar crimes like Segregation against women as well as Eve teasing and rape in India are known issues. When it is reported, the local police give less importance or neglect or pressurize victims of rape to withdraw the case in order to put off legal complaints.

All newspapers, TV channels are up with recent Delhi Gang rape of a physiotherapy intern student. This news has shocked not only India but the world too. We Indians need not only be proud of rich culture, rich tradition, rich heritage but also the rich raping country.

A female physiotherapy student was beaten and gang raped in Delhi on 16 December 2012, and died thirteen days later while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore on December 29, 2012.

I am happy that many women's organizations, common people from all parts of the country and the world have condemned the act and protested for Justice. Justice is not only delayed but denied when it comes to women's issue. At least now, people know what their Rights are? Right to raise voice against crimes affecting common man and women.

Is this happening for the first time? Did similar incidence occur in any other part of the country?

No, this is not the first time a rape case and sexual harassment and assaults have come to government and public notice. Every day this type of incidence occurs in different parts of India. Yes, It goes unnoticed or it is not reported. In India as per the statistic report of 2010 is 22172 cases reported at the police station and rate per 100,000 population is 1.8 as per 2010 statistics. Sexual assault cases on women in India increased by 25 percent in the six years to 2011, and lawyers believe much of this can be attributed to the low rate of convictions.

A few months ago there was a similar incidence taking place in Haryana-a young woman raped by few men in the car. Someone also filmed the attacked and circulated the same in the village. Consequently, the girl's father with low head and shame hanged himself. Indian film's portrait such incidences. --Unfortunately, this incident did not receive such a huge protest from the common public of Mera Bharat Mahaan country.

After the above incidence was still on the air, a couple of similar incidences reported in other parts of the country like in Chennai, Kolkata and so on. Two days ago, a middle aged woman was raped and murdered and her body was found at Kalkaji in New Delhi.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Saturday said the government had heard the people's voice demanding an end to crime against women and also leaders of the opposition Party again a woman Ms. Sushma Swaraj too condemned such act. So, what is the next step that would be taken? This obviously NEW YEAR 2013 Celebration!!!!.. The land that regard and worship Women as Goddess also use her as a throwaway and a lust fulfilling object. They are stripped, beaten, abused and parade naked in the streets of the village and town as a punishment. "Yeh Hai Hindustani Pun-Who proudly calls himself as Indian".

That anger filled protest has indeed sent a hysteric wave across the country touch each individual having a soul and whose heart beats for common people sufferings with Capital punishment for Rapist. The Internet was flooded with comments urging public hanging and beatings.

Every family with young girls are under going nightmares and are worried. Which part of the country is safe for WOMEN and GIRLS?????

"Overall, reported rapes in India have increased by about 25 percent over the past six years, but there are no reported figures for gang rape. On Sunday, a 23-year-old medical student was admitted to a hospital in Delhi after being raped by several men on a moving bus. The case garnered national attention briefly shuttering India’s Parliament on Tuesday and prompting calls by politicians for the death penalty for her attackers."

"Protesters said they had hoped Ms. Sheila Dixit would emerge from her home so they could talk to her about the issue, but she did not. Instead, at one point they were sprayed with a water hose. “I thought because Sheila Dixit was a lady, she would be sensitive to the pain” of a rape victim, said Hina. “But she is not.”

"The death of the gang-rape victim came just days after an 18-year-old woman in Punjab State committed suicide by drinking poison after being raped by two men and then humiliated by male police officers. In the wake of the deaths, Indian women, who are long accustomed to “regular harassment and assault during the day and are fearful of leaving their homes alone after dark,” poured into the streets to demand protection from the mainly male police force".

Dear friends in India,
I understand the cultural issues that have lead to the kind of treatment of women in India we have heard so much about lately and to the non-reporting of rape cases.
I understand the enormous police and governmental corruption that leads to inaction and blocking of protests and treating protesters like criminals instead of citizens.
But I don't really get why the government is so reluctant to take any action to help secure women's safety and the prosecution of rapists. Can someone please explain? What is the underlying issue here?

I read in the paper taht the Delhi Governmnet has sactioned Rs 15 Lkah to the family of the victim and assured one Governmnet job for one of the family members!-Will this kind of action taken by the government really help in doing justice to the victim. In fact more cases are now spurting up from all parts of the country.
As protests erupted across Delhi on Wednesday after a recent gang-rape in the nation’s capital, the police in the northern state of Bihar said a 15-year-old girl had been admitted to a government hospital after being raped by three men.

Also one case in Hyderabad, 5 year old girl from interior Bidar Karnataka state raped by two men was hospitalized in Hyderabad. Though the doctors have discharged her, she is not doing well and complains of severe abdomen pain, unable to pass stool and blood flow while urinating and passing stool.

The Times Of India-Bhuvanehswar JAN1, 2013

KENDRAPADA: An 18-year-old girl was allegedly beaten up, molested and paraded naked after she objected to defecation by some villagers near a pond in Kendrapada district of Odisha on Sunday.

Police said they are looking for five people named in an FIR filed by the girl's father. "The girl's father claimed that she had suffered serious injuries," a police officer said. The girl was admitted to the hospital.

The girl's parents sought the help of the Kendrapada SP, saying some ruling party leaders were trying to shield the accused.

"Despite threats, I went and reported the matter to the police. Some villagers who tried to save my daughter were also assaulted," the girl's father said.

On Monday, All India Democratic Women's Association leaders met the victim in hospital.

They also sent letters to the State Commission for Women, the State Human Right Commission and chief minister Naveen Patnaik seeking strong action against the accused.

No class on self defence, no amount of police force, no law to punish the guilty would help. The change will have to come from within. Let us teach our sons to treat not only their wife, sisters and girl friends but also every woman with respect. RIP - Nirbhaya. May you be the torch that will drive away the dark days for the woman of our country !

Highly ridiculous act-How shameful!!
Panaji, Jan 14 (IANS) A seven-year-old girl was raped in the toilet of a school in Vasco town Monday evening, police said.
The minor girl was found in shock in the toilet and when her parents discovered she was raped, they along with their friends and local residents locked the school with the teachers and management still inside.
Later Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar as well as other local politicians have arrived at Vasco, 40 km from here, where over 500 concerned and agitating people had still blocked access to the school..
Police said that they had still not been able to nab the accused, who they suspect had fled even before the melee started.
"We have a description given to us by the girl. No arrests have been made yet," a police official said.

"Two-Finger Test"--The test is carried out to determine whether the woman is raped or not. The examination of a woman's vagina to find out whether it is elastic and paves way for two finger insertion. If is is elastic enough for two finger insertion it means that the woman is accustomed or used to sexual intercourse". How ridiculous!! Again I got to read an article on "Rape and Medical evidence gathering systems in Economic Political weekly Jan19, 2013 which also states on "Two-finger test".
