Significance of Ugadi-Yugadi Festival in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka Welcome to Kharanaam Samvatsaram!!! Unlike West, new year celebration marks as a welcoming sign of Spring season. The name "Ugadi" is derived from Sanskrit and is two words joined together. Yuga (era) + Aadi ( Beginning) It means "Beginning of a New age. It is believed that the creator Lord Brahma started his work of creation on this day of Chaitra suddha padhyami(Ugadi). The onset of spring also in some way symbolically marks the beginning of new life. It is called as Ugadi in Telugu and Yugadi in Kannada which means new age. As some one has rightly said "Ugadi signify many things – leaving behind turbulence of past, commencement of new phase in life with renewed vigour and energy. ‘Bevu-bella – combination of bitter and sweet reminds us of pleasure and pain to be accepted with equanimity". Ugadi is also regarded the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon's orbit. On this day predictions are made for the New Year. The panchanga shravanam or listening to the yearly Almanac - calendar is done traditionally at the temples and in villages. Preparations for the festival begin almost a week ahead. Houses are cleaned/floors, doors, windows are washed and mopped. As everyone has the right to get Peace, to be at Peace, Prosperity, Health, Wealth and Happiness.Nevertheless, life is not bed of only roses but thorns do prick. These thorns are the sadness, bitter experience, unpleasant memories and sickness. So, the festival signifies of amalgamation of good and bad, happy and sorrow, Heath and sickness. And it prepares every individual to be sportive and take all aspects of life with a smile. Mango leaves and coconuts are used to initiate pooja or any other auspicious occasions as per Hindu tradition. splash of fresh cow dung water in front of houses good rangolis decorates the entrance of the house. Again, from this time on mercury also shoots up and all the hidden insects beneath the ground start entering house. In order to stop them from entering the houses and at the same time also provide some food rangolis are drawn with rice flour.Cow dung balls also act as anti insecticide. This is a common sight in front of every household. In Karnataka A paste of Bevu-Bella (neem and jaggery) is served firstly in the morning on this day. The paste has a special significance; it denotes like bitter and Sweet tastes every individual faces similar experiences in ones life. In Andhra Pradesh a special Ugadi Pachadi is prepared and served firstly in the morning. The pachadi is prepared with neem leaves, jaggery, raw mango, tamarind juice, green chilli and a pinch of salt. As all different taste buds help us to relish different taste so, is our life filled with happy, colourful, dull, sad, fear, anger, hotty and merry.
