Navaratri- Art exhibition and Reunion time for women

As there is a saying in Tamil ---"ANGALLAKKU ORU NAAL SHIVARATHRI, PENGALLAKKU OMBODU NAAL NAVARATHRI". Translation: for men it only one day called Shivarathri for whereas for women it is nine days called  Navarathri.

 I wait for Navaratri to come. To celebrate Dolls Festival in my house. This is the only time when I can call my friends, relatives and near and dear one’s home. This again is the auspicious time for Pujas and celebrations. I look Navaratri the period for Women get together with a purpose. It is the time for women to undergo or give  counselling sessions.


The prevalent of the joint family system in India did have a lot of advantages over disadvantages. However, women had little scope to speak or share with fellow women of the same family. Usually, women were not encouraged to speak loud or share with Mother-in-laws or Sisters-in-laws.  Either they took some help from Co-sisters or had to depend upon biological mothers for  remedial service or advice. It was this during Navarathri, women could speak out, share personal problems, issues, exhibit talents like singing, dancing, art and craft work.

Tamasha Folk Theatre of Maharashtra

Tamasha is a traditional Marathi folk art form. It includes both singing and dancing forms. It is widely performed theatre groups within the state of Maharashtra, India. It is in fact a mobile theatre that goes to different regions of Maharashtra. The word ‘Tamasha’ is Persian origin meaning ‘to have fun or to play’. Today, this word is commonly used in Hindi, Marathi, Kannada and Urdu. Again, some have researched the origin of the word Tamasha to Turkish langaugeand has entered into urdu and finally borrowed from Urdu to Marathi. Oggu Katha - Oral Storytelling Theatrical Performance of Telangana

Oggu Katha is a traditional folklore singing praising and narrating the stories of the Hindu God Mallana. Mallanna Katha which is performed by the Oggu Pujarulu (minstrels) to their patron community, the seven Kurumas / Gollas. Mallanna Katha is their caste myth, which narrates the exploits of Mallanna their caste hero. As the Mallanna Katha is narrated using a particular percussion instrument called as "Oggu" by "Oggu Pujarulu" it is popularly termed as Oggu Katha.  In other words, Oggu Katha is the style of narration, which belongs to a distinct genre with an admixture of song-speech-dance-sequence performed by 5 to 7 performers having a lead narrator within them. They also narrate stories on  Beerappa,  Yellamma, Pedaraasi Peddamma Katha.
